Boran Atillas wore loose black trousers and a tunic cinched at the waist by his red sash. Without armor, Sundown went to the extreme, peeling his robes down to fall over his pants, exposing his chest. He looked strong and sinewy where his dark skin was visible, and Helga saw him as a giant. It never ceased to impress her how different some men looked with their bodies exposed compared to when they were fully dressed.

ESO types had the same look as Jumpers, as if they spent their lives running endlessly and lifting heavy weights while skipping meals when they could. She wasn’t the only one paying attention and Boran, sensing this, won over the crowd by flourishing his las-sword like a rotor. Helga found it comical. There was something childish, she felt, about his actions. In his mind, he displayed his skill, provoking his opponent, but to her it was embarrassing.

Had that been Quentin, Anders, or Raileo on the stage overcompensating, she would have booed them herself just to show her disapproval. However, Boran Atillas wasn’t worried about anyone thumbing their nose at his blade dance. He spun one way and then the next, maneuvering the sword behind his back to feint at his patient opponent, who offered no response. Arn stepped between them, looking regal in a blue and silver uniform reminiscent of an Alliance admiral, but it had no medals, pins, or epaulets to denote rank. Still, he looked very official to Helga, who had only ever seen him in robes and other flowing garments.

He held a hand out to Sundown, who had retreated to his corner of the stage to wait with his las-sword still inside its scabbard. The Jumper nodded his assent to say he was ready, and Arn turned and gave the still flourishing Boran a weary look before jutting out his hand toward him. The Vestalian nodded, and Arn quickly retreated to the steps descending from the stage, leaving the two combatants circling one another to the sounds of positive encouragement from everyone in attendance.

The two warriors paced the floating stage, each watching the other, daring him to make the first charge. Below them, the rock floor had shifted from when Helga saw Arn holding court on the same platform. They squared off above a deep, black pit bordered by a jagged, rocky edge. All around on several levels of tiered seating, the Jumpers rooted for their chosen champion while two of the three suns, Celith and Windry at odd angles overhead, flooded the basin with their brilliance.

Sundown struck first with a quick swipe at his opponent’s neck. The less experienced Boran raised his las-sword to save his head. As soon as he’d committed to the move, he realized his mistake, which left his midsection open. A low crouching cut sent his slash flying, nearly disemboweling and bringing their duel to an abrupt end. Boran, though not as well-traveled or skilled as the Nighthawk, jumped back far enough to avoid his death. Sundown charged him, spinning violently to deliver his well-rehearsed combination’s third swipe.
